Education: Tom Dixon

Rock and Roll meets Interior Design. Many Interior Designers are familiar with Tom Dixon and his line of exquisite sculptural home furnishings and lighting. But, did they know that music and motorcycles were the first pieces of inspiration for Dixon?

Dixon was born of an English father and French mother who moved to the punk rock capital of the world, Great Britain, when he was just four years old. Inspired by motorcycles, rebellion and music he formed a disco-punk band, Funkapolitan, in school.

It was Dixon's passion for motorcycles that led to furniture. He discovered that he loved welding while repairing motorcycles and after a motorcycle accident broke his leg, and he left Funkapolitan, his focus went to bringing edge into our design life.

Dixon first arrived onto the scene when his "S-Chair" (below) was manufactured by Giulio Cappellini. Since then, he has headed design for Habitat and Artek. In 2002, he established Tom Dixon. A British design and manufacturing company of lighting and furniture. His work continues to specialize in welded salvage furniture.

But he didn't stop there. In 2007, he developed Design Research Studio that specializes in Interior Design, Architecture, Installations and Exhibitions. You can see some of this work in The Royal Academy of Arts London and the Tokyo Hipsters Club to name a few.

Check out some of his designs here.
