Alternative Surf Shack

For the Central Coast home I've been working on, there is one room that I am particularly excited about - the Kid's Room! It's planned to be a "bunk house" with multiple beds and a small media center to keep them entertained when the beach is closed.

The easiest solution for a seaside Kid's Room is pirate ships and sea shells. But, I'm hoping to accomplish a more versatile design that can easily grow with the children.

As inspiring as the beach can be, I find just as more inspiration in local surf shops. I love the combination of textures (rough wood planks and glossy surf boards) and the colors are always bright, fun and a combination of patterns.

One amazing display of this mash up is the Chandelier Creative Montauk Surf Shack (above). Richard Christiansen is the founder of the fashion focused Manhattan ad agency Chandelier Creative. He is also the man who turned this summer rental into a weekend retreat for his staff.

The vibe is definitely weathered, wood paneling and furniture upholstered in vintage fabrics. The house sleeps twenty in beds and canvas tents. The accents are vintage artwork, surfboards, and Pendleton blankets. It's the perfect inspiration for a transitional seaside Kid's Room!

Take a look at my "Surf Shack" Pinterest board full of possibilities inspired by this project. And stay tuned to see how it develops, I'll be sure to share!
