Electric Light Orchestra! Or, according to their US audience in the nineteen seventies, "the English guys with big fiddles". ELO were a British rock group from Birmingham, England from 1971-1986 with a brief reunion in 2001.
ELO was conceived by Roy Wood as a musical concept that would use violins, cellos, string bases, horns and woodwinds to give a new band a classic sound. The idea was to take rock music in the direction that the Beatles had left behind for a new sound. The name became a literary translation of an "electric" band with a "light orchestra" sound.
And so, in 1972 they debuted at The Greyhound Pub in Croydon, UK. They found moderate success with the sound in their career, holding the record for 20 Billboard "Hot 100 Top 40" hits in US history without ever having a number one.
If you know me, or follow me on Twitter, you know that I am a huge fan of the seventies. The music, the culture and any movie about the era (obsessed with American Hustle). I love ELO and their combination of feel good sounds, notably "Livin' Thing". They are inspiring me on this Sunday afternoon and thought you all would enjoy a listen.
