Music: Free Fallin

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Oh and an American musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers who has sold over sixty million albums.

Born and raised in Florida, Petty's musical interests began when he met Elvis Presley at the age of ten. He became an instant fan of the "King of Rock & Roll". But it was another musical legend that made him want to join a band, the Beatles.

After seeing the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show he began guitar lessons with Don Felder (future member of the Eagles). Experimental bands followed before forming Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1979.

In celebration of all things Tom for the month of September, we're going to take a listen to "Free Fallin".

No Heartbreakers here though. "Free Fallin" is the opening track from Petty's solo album, Full Moon Fever. It's lyrics heavily inspired by Los Angeles with references to "the Valley", Reseda, and Ventura Boulevard.

Chris jones, a reviewer for BBC-Music, explains that the song "addressed nostalgia while explaining how he'd (Petty) reached this level of success. Hit single Free Fallin' mistily looked back at a childhood sweetheart ("She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis... I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart") left in his wake as he left Florida for the West Coast in search of stardom".
