Storybook Bedding

My new topic is Storybook and I'm going to start out the feature with some book inspired bedding pieces.

It's easy to find novelty sheets and blankets inspired by your favorite stories. But novelty isn't often very chic for an Interior Designer. Instead, let's look for more subtle hints of those classic story's.

Like above, Serena & Lily's "Kite Sheet Set" seems indirectly inspired by Mary Poppins and her chimney sweeper's "Let's Go Fly A Kite" scene. As you can guess, it's part of their children's collection of bedding, but the next one can actually work for grown-ups.

A subtle nod to Dorothy's famed blue gingham dress from The Wizard of Oz, the "Gingham Sheet Set" works wonderfully with denims, rusty linens, and scenic prints (as seen on Serena & Lily). If you're looking to channel Oz pair it with vibrant emerald greens and yellows. Or if that is too vibrant for you, go for a subdued primary color vibe and channel the Scarecrow with straws, wheats, and field greens.

This next set for Moby Dick is probably the most obvious inspiration (and a little novelty-esque). The "Make A Splash" Quilt from the Land of Nod features cement grey and navy whales on one side and color blocked stripes on the reverse.

If you're looking for a more subtle approach, use Serena & Lily's "Wave Sheet Set".  I love the idea of pairing these designs with masculine plaids and patent yellows, both prints and colors you'd see in the fisherman's flannel shirt and raincoat.

Finally, one of my favorites. The "Fox Sheet Set" from Serena & Lily can be a playful spin on the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. This fox design is also available on a pillow cover.

If you're looking for a more contemporary, grown-up approach to the big bad wolf. Check out Anthropologie's "Herd Pillow". Or for a traditional vibe, the "Patchwork Forest Creature Pillow".
