Art: Arlene Love

Cupid has got some serious explaining to do. Actually, this isn't the handy work of Cupid. But when the artist is Arlene Love it's easy to interpret it as a sort of "Cupid's Miss". Isn't all art open for interpretation?

Arlene Love is an artist who created this Cast in 1978. Composed of Polyester Resin/Fiberglass and Steel it is a tribute to St. Sebastian. Love is documented as an early pioneer in the use of cast resins and her work has been featured in museums like New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Sebastian was an early Christian saint and martyr who is said to have been killed during a persecution of Christians. Which is why he is commonly depicted tied to a post with the arrows. When I first saw this I immediately thought of Cupid. It may not be romantic in it's intention, but it's a representation of "Love" on several levels; the artist (literally Love) and one's love of faith.
