Music: Wicked Game

Since we just learned about the mischevious ways of Cupid let's explore a different kind of love song. One that "drips with a sorrowfully conflicted tone about unrequited love".

Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" was released in 1989 but didn't become a hit until 1990 when it was featured in the film Wild at Heart. It was the first commerical hit for Isaak reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991.

It's infamous video only added to it's success. Directed by Herb Ritts (also mentioned in my Janet Jackson feature) it shows Isaak and supermodel Helena Christensen rolling around and frollicking on the beaches of Hawaii. VH1 ranked the video No. 4 on it's "50 Sexiest Video Moments" and you'll soon see why.

Romance and heartbreak? Can these two exist together? In fact, one does not exist without the other. You'll find that many of the songs I choose to feature while on the subject of Romance deal with the realities of situations. The complications and the fact that sometimes another person cannot see the world as you do. That not everything is perfect in love.

Isaak conveys this message exquisitely. Not only with the lyrics but with his delivery and style. The ache in his voice as he tells himself that everything he wants, he doesn't want to experience because it's "only going to break your heart".
