Film: Broken Embraces

A Romantic Thriller? Who knew the two could exist together? It's the perfect description for Broken Embraces and just another gift through film from Pedro Almodovar.

Almodovar is a Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer. His films are characterized by complex narratives and he uses elements of pop culture, irreverent humor, strong colors, and glossy décor to bring his melodramas to life. And yes, his films are in Spanish. So, unless you're fluent en espanol be prepared to read the subtitles.

Subtitles have never been able to take away the power of every film I have watched (and usually own) by the brilliant Almodovar. There is a passion in his films that he never fails to convey given any storyline, no matter how outrageous.

Broken Embraces is a love story at its core. It's about a blind screenwriter who recalls a tragic love affair with an aspiring actress cast in his last film, Girls and Suitcases. Without revealing too much of the story, or it's ending, this actress (played by the always seductive Penelope Cruz) is married. So as you can imagine there is plenty of complex narratives to explore.

It's definitely tragic, but it's definitely Romantic. Which makes it a perfect addition to my month of Romance.
